It has given me great pleasure to work with Milan’s Concert Band. As I play a brass instrument, I have a natural affection for all wind instruments. After a long interval, the chance to return as a guest soloist in this band, and moreover during its 150th anniversary year, was a remarkable opportunity, and I was highly satisfied by the results. The level of musical skill attained by the instrumentalists of the Concert Band makes it possible, even more today than before, to “work” with the pleasure of creating music, without any wasted energy. Rehearsals for the concert held in September in the splendid setting of Palazzo Marino were uncomplicated and altogether a pleasant experience. Even at moments in which I had to perform the dual role of conductor and soloist, I had complete confidence in the solid musical support provided by the Band’s instrumentalists. I think that it is very good thing that a great city such as Milan has a Concert Band comprising professional musicians. This type of ensemble, very common in small towns, where they are comprised almost exclusively of amateurs, but not usually present in large cities, is, in my opinion, a fine method, better than many others, of bringing instrumental music into contact with the general public. The enthusiasm of the music-lovers present during the packed event at Palazzo Marino provides further confirmation of the warmth and gratitude that the people of Milan feel for their Concert Band.
